$1 a Week, $52 a Year
In 2001, during a fundraiser for Paul Quinn College, radio personality Willis Johnson of Soul 73 KKDA asked listeners for ideas on how the community could help support the college.
On the final day, Charles L. Calhoun submitted a simple but powerful idea called “The $1 a Week, $52 a Year Campaign.”
The concept was straightforward:
If members of the community each sacrificed just $1 per week, that would equal $52 a year to help support the education and future of Black youth.
From a small weekly sacrifice, the impact could be tremendous.
The idea won, and the campaign ran from 2001 to 2013 on Soul 73 KKDA. Even after the station left the airwaves, Charles L. Calhoun continued honoring the commitment by giving $52 each year.
Today, the question remains:
How many HBCU alumni, parents, family members, and friends are willing to give at least $52 a year to help support the Paul Quinn College National Alumni Association (PQCNAA) in its efforts to provide more scholarships for current and future Quinnites and to raise additional funds for our beloved alma mater, Paul Quinn College?
A small commitment can make a lasting difference.
$1 a week. $52 a year. Invest in the future.
